Astro Biz: MoonPie

Many businesses, products, and places have names rooted in space and astronomy. We’re featuring one every Tuesday on Seattle Astronomy.

IMG_0950Today’s Astro Biz is the MoonPie, in honor of the new Moon coming up on Saturday.

The MoonPie has been around almost a century now, since 1917, and according to the MoonPie website they’re producing about a million of them every day at their bakery in Chattanooga, Tenn. The site notes that the snack was invented when a Kentucky coal miner asked for a treat “as big as the Moon.” The MoonPie started out as simply marshmallow, graham cracker, and chocolate, but now they’re available in more than a half-dozen flavors and in mini and double-decker versions. They also make coconut and pecan pies.
