Many businesses, products, and places have names rooted in space and astronomy. We’re featuring one every Tuesday on Seattle Astronomy.
This week’s Astro Biz is the Amtrak Coast Starlight train route. The Coast Starlight offers daily service between Seattle and Los Angeles and many points in between. The full trip to L.A. is a one-nighter lasting about 35 hours. It is scheduled to leave Seattle at 9:35 a.m. each day and to arrive in the City of Angels at 9 p.m. the next day. The northbound run departs Los Angeles at 10:10 a.m. and gets you home just after 8 p.m. the following day.
We picked the Coast Starlight for this week because we actually rode the train to Portland, Oregon yesterday to attend the monthly meeting of the Rose City Astronomers. The train takes a little longer than driving to Portland does, as the trip is just over four hours. But it is astronomically more relaxing to travel by train, and you can use the time to write your astronomy blog posts, or just drink coffee and watch the scenery go by. Portland’s lovely Union Station is just a short walk or Met ride from downtown.
