SAS star parties this week, banquet tix on sale

The Seattle Astronomical Society‘s annual banquet is just around the corner, coming up on Saturday, Jan. 30, and tickets are set to go on sale to the general public today. Fred Espenak, also known as “Mr. Eclipse,” will be the keynote speaker, and he’ll talk about all you need to know to go see the total solar eclipse that will zip across the United States next year.

Tickets for non-members are $60. The price for Seattle Astronomical Society members is $45, so why not sign up now and save a few bucks? You’ll get other great member benefits as well.

Star parties

saslogoThe Seattle Astronomical Society plans its free monthly public star parties for Saturday, Jan. 16 at two locations: Green Lake in Seattle and Paramount Park in Shoreline. Both will get under way at 6 p.m., weather permitting.

taslogoThe Tacoma Astronomical Society will hold one of its public nights beginning at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Fort Steilacoom campus of Pierce College. The presentation for the evening is titled, “How Big is Big? How Small is Small?” Club members will have telescopes on hand for observing if the weather allows.

Up in the sky

The Moon flits past Uranus and Neptune this week, making both ice giants a little easier to spot. Comet Catalina continues to push north toward the Big Dipper and can be spotted in the early-morning hours.
