This week’s Astro Biz is the Jupiter Studios apartments on 17th Avenue near Fir Street in Seattle’s Central Area. The Jupiter is owned by Pacific Living Properties, which operates a some twenty apartment buildings in the city and another dozen or so on the eastside. The Jupiter apartments are new studios ranging from 227 up to 340 square feet. The company’s website says the building was constructed to green standards. It is one of a great many new buildings recently opened in the general neighborhood, and many more are under construction.
We chose Jupiter because its namesake planet is at opposition to the Sun today! That means Jupiter will be at its highest point in the south around midnight and will be visible all evening. It also means it’s at about its closest approach to Earth so will look largest in our telescopes. We’re also in the midst of a series of double shadow transits, when we’ll be able to see shadows of two of Jupiter’s moons cross the face of the planet at the same time. The next one will occur next Monday, March 14.
